About the Position

๐Ÿฝ Opportunity Mt White Station, a working high-country station in the Waimakariri Gorge of the Southern Alps, is hiring a Seasonal Cook for its 2026/27 tourism season โ€” and the hook is right there in the job's DNA: this is land-to-plate cooking, where the roast on tonight's table may well have come off the Station itself, and the cook doesn't just plate it and disappear but sits with guests to share the stories behind it. Food is treated as central to the guest experience here, not an afterthought to the scenery, which is why the season runs a full seven months (7 October 2026 โ€“ 16 May 2027) rather than a short summer stint. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿณ Role & Responsibilities Cook high-country cuisine to a high standard โ€” roasts, home baking, fresh vibrant salads, old-fashioned desserts, warm hearty meals Cook for paying guests and cater confidently for groups, including large events when required Prepare a staff dinner each week for the wider Station team Cover housekeeping and guest service alongside kitchen duties โ€” this is a genuinely mixed hospitality role, not cooking in isolation Spend time with guests, sharing stories of Station life and the land-to-plate approach Follow NZ food safety requirements, including the Station's Food Control Plan and required records Make practical, resourceful use of Station produce and supplies given the remote setting ๐ŸŒŽ ChefJobs Abroad Analysis Life at Mt White is shaped by the Southern Alps themselves โ€” a small, shared-living team, roads that call for a manual 4WD rather than a sedan, and a rhythm built around the Station rather than a town. What sets this apart from a typical seasonal cook posting is how much weight the role puts on the food actually telling the Station's story: guests are there for high-country immersion, and the cook is one of the people delivering that, dinner table conversation included. It's a genuine trade-up for a cook who's tired of anonymous high-volume kitchens and wants a role where good food, a good story and a rugged, wide-open backdrop all come from the same place. โœ… Best Fit Cooks who take real pride in hearty, well-presented New Zealand high-country food โ€” roasts, baking, old-fashioned desserts Cooks who genuinely enjoy talking with guests and sharing station stories, not just working the pass Practical, resourceful cooks comfortable making the most of what's on hand in a remote location Cooks happy to cover housekeeping and guest service alongside cooking, in a small live-in team Confident, calm operators who can cook for paying guests and cater larger events without a big brigade behind them Cooks who hold a full NZ licence and are comfortable driving a manual 4WD on rough Station roads Not a fit for cooks who want a single-lane kitchen-only role with no guest interaction or housekeeping
